Natalini

The Natalini family owns the Poggio degli Ulivi estate just south of the town of Montalcino, within the DOCG Brunello di Montalcino zone.  The estate contains 190 hectares (470 acres), most of which is planted with grain. Only the choicest 12 hectares (30 acres) at an altitude of 900 ft above sea level have been specifically selected by agronomists for vineyards.  In this microclimate the hills protect the slopes from cold north winds, allowing mild, southerly sea breezes to ventilate the Sangiovese vines. The southern exposure permits the sunlight to illuminate the vineyards all day long.  The soil is reddish clay and rocky, assuring proper drainage.

Bruno Natalini also has contracted to vinify and mature Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Shiraz under the Tenementi Natalini banner, clinging to the lofty standards of the Poggio degli Ulivi estate.

The Vine

Although once regarded as a blending grape for Cabernet based wines, Merlot is enjoying its day in the sun as a chic, trendy varietal. It has been in Bordeaux since 1784, where it is responsible for great Pomerols and St. Emilions. Its opulent, plumy style with low tannins has made Merlot a worldwide hit.  In Italy Merlot can be found in Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna and Umbria, but most of all in northeastern Italy.

The Syrah (aka Shiraz) was supposedly brought to the Rhone Valley by Crusaders.  This black skinned varietal produces the long-lived Hermitage and Cote Rotie.  In Australia it is often blended with Cabernet; by itself it is responsible for Australia’s most renowned wine Penfolds Grange.  Fairly new in Italy, mostly in Tuscany and Piedmont, Shiraz has adapted well to the Midi in France, Valais in Switzerland, California, South Africa and South America.  Whether peppery and spicy or sweet, ripe and chocolaty, the noble Shiraz is one of the world’s most important and chic dark grapes.

The Wine

Natalini Charisma is made from Merlot and Shiraz harvested in proximity to the wine village of Montalcino in Tuscany. After 20 days of fermentation, the wine is aged for 6 months in stainless steel vats, followed by a refinement of at least 6 months in the bottle.

Although charisma will develop in the bottle for 3 to 5 years, it is elegant and harmonious when young.  We are certain that you will find both the wine and its price very charismatic.
